Beam-column members are generally designed using simple linear interaction (LI) equation by calculating the beam and column strength separately. Direct strength method (DSM), the design approach for cold formed steel section neglects the effect of warping in the strength of member. The present study focusses on incorporating the warping effects and develop a reliable design procedure. Experimental and numerical studies are conducted with three major objectives 1) Effect of warping restraints under axial compression. 2) Behaviour of beam-column member under uniform moment 3) Influence of varying moment on the beam-column design. To achieve all the objectives overall 104 experiments are carried out on lipped channel cross-section members under axial compression and beam-column actions. Two lengths of members are selected for beam-column study and are tested under a) Major axis bending b) minor axis bending and c) Bi-axial bending with uniform and non-uniform end moments. Further a companion numerical model has been developed using (ABAQUS) and validated with the experimental results. The results from the experiment and numerical model are compared with the code specification AISI S100-16 for DSM design both for the linear interaction (LI) framework and the non-linear interaction (NLI) framework. The study proposes a factor to account for the influence of moment amplification factor (Cm) on the strength prediction. The consequence of the proposed modified design rules in non-linear interaction framework (NLI) will be discussed in this seminar.
