Details

Polycyclic (hetero)aromatic molecules (PAHs or PHAs) are highly versatile π-extended two-dimensional organics. Generally, they are used as chromophores and semiconductors in functional organic applications.1 Incorporating heptagon(s) increase(s) the strain in all-hexagon nanographene systems, leading to non-planar saddle-like structures (negatively-curved nanographene).2 Such a structural change alters their aromaticity, optical, and electrochemical properties significantly through interactions with adjacent rings.2,3 However, the synthetic approaches towards heptagon-embedded molecular nanocarbons need further development due to the inherent difficulties of heptagon formation and incorporation into polyarene frameworks.3,4 Addressing these challenges holds promise for unlocking new frontiers in the design and synthesis of advanced functional materials with tailored properties and applications. This seminar will highlight some of these aspects linked to the research proposal.
