Tuning the properties of metallaborane clusters via substitution

The direct conversion of B-H bonds to substituted vertices is an attractive strategy for the synthesis
of cage compounds with desired properties. However, compared to C-H functionalization, boron
functionalization is less explored. The most known approach of B−H functionalization is substitution
leading to the alkylation, hydroxylation or halogenation and their further organic transformations [1].
These functionalizations lead to the formation of molecules having applications ranging from materials
science to medicine [2]. Though the electrophilic substitution of hydrogen at B−H vertices of the boranes
or carboranes is well-known, the exo-cluster substitution of metallaboranes differs markedly and there
are only few examples are known in the literature [3]. In this seminar, the synthesis, properties and
applications of various functionalized boron clusters as well as preliminary result of my research work in
this field will be discussed.
