In this seminar, based on my doctoral research, I aim to bring forth the changing dynamics of Bhumihar caste associations and their shifting modalities of caste assertion and identity formulations. Therefore this seminar presentation examines the historical development, growth and contemporary articulations of Bhumihar caste association in Bihar by focusing on their relationship with land, political economy and ideological orientations. In particular, this presentation will point out that through a visible process of culturalization, Bhumihars are able to maintain their exclusivity and purported superiority in the contemporary Bihar society even while upholding the mantle of Hindutva unity along with other lower castes. The observations and arguments for this presentation are based on the primary data collected through group discussions and personal interviews which are accompanied by a significant expanse of secondary data to substantiate the various facts and explanations.
