Details

During the manufacturing process or operation time, several flaws can occur in the carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. They can reduce the mechanical strength and increase the failure risk. Since the fibers represent the principal load-bearing constituent of a composite, fiber fractures are likely to be the most detrimental to the tensile strength of a composite part. Thus non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of composite parts are necessary to identify and characterise fiber fractures. Induction heating based thermal imaging is a promising non-contact technique to inspect carbon fiber reinforced composites, due to the presence of conductive fibers that allows induced current to flow through. In this talk, different induction heating mechanisms in CFRP composites, detection of fiber fracture, identification of the fracture orientation in multi-directional composite are discussed.
