Canonical shock/turbulence interaction and decaying isotropic turbulence with non-equilibrium effects are studied using DNS. Canonical shock/turbulence involving the interaction of isotropic turbulence with a stationary normal shockwave forms the base case and a fundamental building block in understanding more complex types of shock/turbulence interaction. A hybrid, higher-order parallel flow solver has been developed for this purpose. In smooth regions, the solver uses a sixth-order central scheme with a skew-symmetric split form. In the presence of discontinuities, the solver switches to a fifth-order WENO scheme with Lax-Friedrichs flux splitting. A sensor is used to detect the presence of discontinuities. High enthalpy flows in supersonic and hypersonic regimes are usually associated with high temperatures due to viscous dissipation, and temperature jumps across shocks. At high temperatures, the ideal gas constant specific heats model is not valid. We have used a five-species model and account for chemical reactions and vibrational relaxation. The individual and combined effects of chemical reactions and vibrational relaxation on the shock/turbulence interaction is to be investigated.
