Details

There are over 10 million known insect species and many more are speculated to be yet undiscovered . Many of the known species are capable of flight, and among them a wide variation in flight speed, body and wing morphology, ability to perform flight maneuvers - hovering, landing upside down, flying sideways, taking off backwards and transition from one flight condition to another with ease can be observed. These variations are of interest to biologists curious about the evolution of flight in insects. Many of their questions can be answered by studying rather simple mechanical flapping wing models. Present study aims to address the effect of insect morphological parameters like mass distribution, wing location on body and wing rotation axis on the flight dynamics of simplified flapping fruit fly insect model.
