DRDO envisages to develop long range hypersonic weapon systems for tactical and strategic
use. A hypersonic weapon system brings in lots of advanrtages in the battlefield and gives a
technological edge to the defence services over the adverseries. A Dual combustion Ramjet
(DCR) based hypersonic scramjet system has a very high potential in meeting these
requirements. The dual-combustion ramjet has a fuel-rich gas generator and a supersonic
combustor. Such a dual-propulsion system combines the advantages of a ramjet and a scramjet
which enables the system to operate at wide mach number ranges (4 to 6) The scope of this
research is to design and develop a full scale, working fuel-rich dump combustor (gas
generator) for a DCR engine. The sizing of the full scramjet system was carried out to arrive at
the scope and specifications of the dump combustor. An experimental setup has been developed
at DRDL scramjet test facility. Full scale GG (gas generator) has been realized. Experiments
are underway to understand the ignition characteristics of the GG while operating at fuel rich
conditions.
