Aluminium and its alloys (Al) have huge potential in automobile and aerospace industries due to their significant light weighting potential along with several advantages. These alloys often show moderate strength and poor wear resistance. Metal matrix nano composites and ultrafine grained materials often show high wear resistance and excellent strength properties in their individual level. In order to gain the benefit of both types of materials, novel ultrafine grained (UFG) Al matrix nano-composite sheets with varying reinforcement content were developed by an innovative cryogenic deformation based hybrid manufacturing route in 1st phase of PhD work. The structure-property correlation, theoretical modeling, thermal stability, formability and advanced roll forming characteristics of the developed high performance UFG Al composite sheets were studied in the next phase of PhD. The developed UFG Al nano composite sheets showed significant improvement in strength and thermal stability than their base and UFG counterparts. The 1st phase of this seminar will focus on brief introduction about manufacturing process and performance of the developed UFG Al nano composite sheets. The as-processed UFG Al nano composites are semi-finished products and the study on their formability are necessary in order to use them for commercial application. The formability evaluation, forming limit diagram, advanced roll forming characteristics of the developed material will be presented in the last part of the seminar along with the structure-property-formability correlation.
