It is well-known that the backward heat conduction problem (BHCP), an inverse problem in PDE, is mathematically ill-posed. We shall discuss and illustrate the ill-posedness of the problem in the setting of an operator equation and also consider a particular method of regularization, namely, the spectral cut-off method, for determining stable approximate approximate solutions for the same.
