We discuss existence of uniformly bounded orthonormal bases in GNS spaces of von Neumann algebras. We will highlight how existence of such bases leads to nightmare when one tries to control their norms and why the standard basis on $LA2[0 ,1]$ is nothing but God gifted . Related questions on special von Neumann algebras are open since the Baton-Rouge conference, 1967.
