In this seminar, an analytical approach proposed for predicting the bend angle of sheet processed with single and multiple laser scans is presented. The proposed approach considers the strain energy stored in the laser heated area that undergoes plastic deformation during laser heating stage. For the given laser energy input, the temperature profile across the sheet thickness is estimated using a one-dimensional heat conduction equation by considering the loss of heat with the surrounding material. Based on the temperature distributions, thermal strains and strain induced stresses and the bending moment were estimated. The strain energy stored due to these thermal stresses and strains to that needed for the bending moment are equated to get the final bend angle. Experiments were performed using a high power CO2 laser for two different materials i.e. AISI 304 SS (low conductive material) and AA 1100 (high conductive material) for different range of laser power, scanning speed and number of scans. The experimental bend angle were compared with the bend angle predicted by the proposed model and found a good agreement. Further, the microstructural analysis and the micro-hardness studies have been performed to understand the effect of processing parameters on the laser formed sheet. Finally, with the application of proposed model a process map is generated to achieve the defect free bend.
