This work discusses the challenges and solutions for managing co-channel interference (CCI) in universal frequency reuse or reuse-1 systems, particularly in frequencies below 1 GHz. Due to large antenna sizes, it's impractical to use multi-antenna techniques to suppress interference at these frequencies, necessitating signal processing algorithms or power control for CCI management. For unicast systems, a solution for CCI and inter-carrier interference (ICI) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based cellular systems is proposed, involving a receiver with a joint channel estimator, time-domain ICI compensation algorithm, and CFO-corrected joint detector. For broadcast systems, which transmit the same content to all users using a single frequency network, managing CCI at local service area boundaries by adjusting transmit power or employing limited orthogonality of local content is suggested. Performance evaluations indicate these methods improve local content coverage without harming spectral efficiency. A practical use-case of the joint channel estimation algorithm in 5G-NR systems is also demonstrated. The work examines various solutions for managing interference in CCI-limited systems.
