Hyperthermia (HT) is a thermal treatment modality which selectively elevates the temperature of tissues/cells to 43 – 45 degrees Celsius for a duration of 30 - 60 minutes. Randomized clinical trials carried out for advanced stage cancers show improved efficacy for standard therapies when microwave HT was delivered as an adjuvant. However, the thermal and non-thermal effects of microwave HT on cancer remain unclear. In this talk, we will present the need for pre-clinical hyperthermia system and electromagnetic devices reported in literature for pre-clinical investigations. The limitations and challenges in adapting existing works for in vitro and in vivo studies will be presented, which forms the motivation of this research. The seminar will conclude with the research proposal on the development of a microwave hyperthermia treatment delivery system for pre-clinical investigations on small animals, cancer cell lines and patient derived tumor organoids. Preliminary results on the proposed research objectives and research plan will also be presented.
