The concept of morphing wing is as old as manned powered flight. Over time, this concept had lost its charm due to practical constraints of technology. The recent advances in the field of control and smart materials have brought a resurgence to the concept of morphing wing aircraft. There is grater potential for the role of morphing wing in smaller sized UAV applications. The morphing wing is more flexible than conventional wing and has an additional problems of moving centre of gravity and inertial forces due to morphing. Changing aerodynamic shape implies changing aerodynamic properties and corresponding change in the aircraft dynamics. Thus the study of a morphing wing aircraft would include aerodynamic, structural and dynamical modeling and analysis. It is proposed to study a morphing aircraft that would replace the rigid control surfaces of conventional wings with flexible control surfaces resulting in a smooth wing. The performance improvement of such a configuration needs to be analysed. The impact of morphing on aircraft stability and control needs to be evaluated.
