The curious interaction of drops and liquid films with various substrate forces have always fascinated fluid mechanics researchers. However, the problem becomes even more enriching when an external force comes into play. In the present work we use travelling surface acoustic waves (SAWs) generated on a lithium niobate based piezoelectric substrate to understand the interaction of acoustic waves with fluid interfaces - an impacting drop and a liquid film. Interestingly, we see SAWs affecting the dynamics of an impacting drop more on a hydrophilic substrate than on a hydrophobic surface. However, the post impact oscillations are more predominant on a hydrophobic surface. When interacting with a liquid film – the acoustic waves lead to the generation of micron-sized liquid drops, which ‘surf’ over the liquid film. We understand the generation and translation mechanism of these drops and predict their size and velocity.
