This talk will review some fundamental results in auction theory. We will start with some results in the independent private values model and then discuss the common values and interdependent values model. This will lead us to the contributions of Paul Milgrom and Robert Wilson. In particular, we will discuss "winner's curse", revenue ranking of standard auctions, and design challenges in combinatorial auctions. The talk will be accessible to a general audience.
