Transition metal-catalyzed enantio- and diastereoselective transformations are the key steps to addresscurrent growing demand for chiral molecules in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and various industries. A large number of homogeneous transition metal catalysts have been introduced for asymmetric (transfer)hydrogenation of polar double bonds such as carbonyls and imines to afford chiral alcohols and amines.1But, most of thesecatalytic systems rely onprecious platinum group metals. In search for sustainable homogeneous catalysis, the replacement of precious metals with iron is getting much more attention by both academic and industrial researchers due to its high abundance in the Earth’s crust, non-preciousness and scarce toxicity.2In past years, researchershaveintroduced various‘non-innocent’ligands, which can effectively influence the redoxproperties of the iron-center. Although, Shvo’s(hydroxycyclopentadienyl)diruthenium hydride complex was the firstmetal-ligand bifunctional catalyst, known since 1980s, but applications of its iron analog known as Knolker complex bearing non-innocent cyclopentadienone ligand have been explored only since 2007.3,4
In this seminar, the development of various non-innocent chiral ligands and their applications in iron-catalyzed asymmetric (transfer)hydrogenation will be discussed. Eventually, our research hypothesis and objectives will be proposed.
