Magnetocaloric materials have been on the spot light for the last few decades and ways to make them suitable for practical applications are being explored. Production of magnetocaloric materials with ease while maintaining the functional properties has been one topical area of research. In this work, magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of Laves phase intermetallic compound RAl2 (R = Gd, Dy and Er), TbNixFe2-x (x = 0.5) and transition metal alloy AlFe2B2 have been studied. These samples have been prepared by (i) conventional arc-melting and (ii) melt-spinning methods. It is found that upon rapid solidification by melt-spinning technique, the samples get nanostructured or microstructured. However, the crystal structure, macroscopic magnetic properties and the order of the magnetic transition remain the same in both arc-melted and melt-spun samples. The magnitude of magnetocaloric effect around the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition is retained in the melt-spun samples. Thus melt-spinning could be a suitable alternate method for preparing potential magnetocaloric alloys and compounds.
